It wasn't just Stark County's football bloodlines that attracted the first Junior World Championship tournament to Fawcett Stadium. What sealed the deal was the area's heart that pumps the blood.
Seven countries will join a U.S. team consisting of the top incoming freshman college football players this summer for the International Federation of American Football junior championships. If these games - a first step in a long process of trying to make football an Olympic sport - are a success, Canton will have to be a part of it.
"Canton is famous for many things, including the volunteer spirit here," USA Football Executive Director Scott Hallenback told the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club on Monday.
Most world championships are every four years; USA Football is hoping to hold the Junior World Championships twice as often.
"I feel strongly enough about the Junior World Championships to lobby IFAF for the need to do this every two years," Hallenback said. "We are definitely looking at Canton for 2012, and I would lobby to come back. I expect this to be an awesome event, and I expect the stands to be full."
